Effective Practices in CPD

The Innovation Challenge

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) consists of activities designed to improve practitioners knowledge, understanding and skills. It supports individual needs and improves professional practice.

The Training and Development Agency (TDA) run the effective practices in CPD programme to enable more innovative in-school CPD initiatives, as well as practitioner research. It also supports the sharing and dissemination of good practice across schools.

Our Approach

The majority of projects within the programme were related to one or more of seven key focus areas. These areas were identified as being particularly relevant to the work of the TDA:

  • the professional and occupational standards
  • science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects
  • 14-19 provision
  • schools facing challenging circumstances
  • extended schools services
  • early professional development
  • impact evaluation

The Innovation Unit worked intensively with three schools involved with the programme - Farnley High School (Leeds), Conyers School (Stockton on Tees) and Linton Village College (Cambridgeshire). We acted as expert external faciliators and supported and challenged the schools to develop their thinking and practice further.
