Jonny Mallinson

Interim Programme Lead: Local Public Services
Jonny leads a wide range of projects, with a particular focus on our Local Services practice.

He has worked with Local Authorities and National Charities across the UK, helping them to apply innovation tools and methods to the most complex social challenges. An experienced researcher and skilled facilitator, Jonny is adept at building supportive, coaching relationships with clients, from senior leaders to front line staff. He is passionate about the role that innovation and human centred design can play in transforming public services and changing people’s lives.

Jonny has applied this expertise in a number of different contexts, from supporting the London Borough of Barnet to generate new perspectives on the challenge by engaging in a programme of ethnographic research, to working with Birmingham City Council to apply a design led approach to their work with communities. He has also worked with whole systems to help transform outcomes at scale, for example designing a radical new approach to integrated commissioning based on the principles of codesign with Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council and Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Clinical Commissioning Group.

Jonny has worked as a researcher and project manager in the social enterprise sector, supporting communities to take on the management of natural assets such as canals and rivers through the Waterways Project (now Shared Assets), and working with the corporate sector on the development of their CSR strategies with the social innovation consultancy, Volans. Before joining Innovation Unit Jonny worked as a researcher at Nesta.
