Milton Keynes

Milton Keynes Local Authority wanted to mobilise school and community leaders around radical potential solutions in one of its most deprived localities. Issues included demographic change; disproportionate levels of deprivation; surplus school places; buildings in need of attention; and, most significantly, lower than desired levels of educational achievement at all key stages.

There was a 3 stage approach, intially over a nine month period, working in partnership with key Local Authority and school leaders. The phases were:

  • an initial enquiry and climate-setting phase designed to engage with the Headteachers of schools and other key local personnel
  • a second phases of wider mobilisation and community engagement
  • a third phases of strategic planning with the locality, wide involvement of Local Authority services and the early enactment of a strategy for implementation.

The outcomes were a radical and potentially transformational proposal for reconfiguration of resources and services, the growth of local leadership capacity to take hold of the change and a very significant consensus around rationalisation of schools.
