The Small Schools Model

Small secondary schools may sometimes go unnoticed because of their size but The Innovation Unit realise their valuable contribution. There are approximately 40 schools nationally with less than 250 pupils.

The Unit wanted to help support these schools and to learn from their unique focus on personalised learning and integral flexibility. The 'Small Secondary Schools Collaborative' was formed, bringing together several innovative heads. Working alongside John Shears, a former Headteacher co-ordinating the project, they explored their own experiences and challenges in face-to-face workshops.

Learning about their focus on the individual pupil has become particularly important in recent years. There is an increasing trend for creating smaller 'units' within larger schools, whilst the school keeps its collective identity.

This practitioner-written guide gives you the background to small secondary schools and how they may be an example for larger schools looking to re-organise their own schools to foster a greater degree of personalised teaching and learning.
