Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College

Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College - outside of school building

The A*-C GCSE results of Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College in Worcester rose from 59% in one year to 70% in the next, with boys achieving 66.6%. The College is delighted - high standards in everything is what it's about. The College aims to provide young people with the skills, qualifications and confidence to become successful and responsible citizens.

The College has been recognised as a centre of academic excellence and it specialises in maths and computing, but it also specialises in caring. Staff recognise that real learning can't take place if pupils are unhappy or are having to deal with problems in their lives. It also recognises that some pupils may need very specific support for a period of time.

Sanctuary is a place in College where this support is provided for three weeks or more and at times when pupils most need it. It's been an amazing success and within Sanctuary pupils feel safe. A paired reading and numeracy scheme has been set up, whereby mentor prefects in Years 10 and 11 give assistance and support to pupils in Years 7 to 9. It works exceptionally well, and boys who have had difficulty focusing on school are now making real progress. Their self-esteem and confidence is so enhanced that within a short space of time they feel ready to leave Sanctuary and join mainstream classes.
