iGCSE in English

Coventry, like much of urban Britain, is increasingly multi-cultural and with many languages spoken. Several of the schools in Coventry wanted to find a way to allow students, newly-arrived in the country, a recognised English language qualification. Although the IGCSE in English is not aligned to any of the National Curriculum programmes of study or accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA), Coventry considered it an ideal qualification to enable those with high ability but limited cultural knowledge or associated linguistic skills to reach standards needed for entry to higher education.

The Order has provided those pupils, who often study the IGCSE abroad before arriving, with continuity and the opportunity to gain a qualification with the academic standard of a standard GCSE. This pilot programme, operating from three community colleges, has contributed to the LA wide drive for personalisation, by providing educational opportunities tailored to the needs and aptitudes of individual pupils.
